Psychological research shows that when the act of violence is random, humans have the tendency to assume that they are the next victim.

This is the reason why terrorism works even though the probability for an attack is extremely low. It is the same perceptual bias that keeps people spending money on lottery tickets, the self-observed notion that they might be the one in a million.
